Whether you have lived in your home for a long time or it is a relatively new place for you, it can be difficult to figure out when it is the right time to sell your home and find a new place to live. Moving can be a tedious process that you may not want to take unless you are truly ready. While you can choose to move at any time, there are some points in your life when you should consider moving.
When Children Move Out
As you get older and your children move out, you may find yourself with more space than you need. Even if you have grandchildren and you love having family coming to visit, you and your spouse may find yourself rattling around in all of the extra space you have now that everyone else has moved out. Many empty-nester couples decide to downsize so that they have some space to host family but they aren’t dealing with the upkeep of a house that doesn’t get fully used.
When You Get a New Job
When you get a new job that you need to relocate for, there is no point in keeping your home. In fact, you may find yourself with a very short window of time in which you need to sell your home, pack everything up, and find a new place to live. Most employers give you somewhere between 2-4 weeks to be ready to start your new job. While you shouldn’t make any final moves until the papers have been signed, it may be a good idea to start looking at properties and making preparation to move when things get more serious.
When You Retire
Retirement is the end of your working life, but it is also the start of a new phase in life where you get to spend more time on your hobbies, traveling, or visiting the people you love. And just like every new phase of life, sometimes you need to make some changes. Many retirees decide to downsize their home or sell it entirely to move closer to family or to allow them to travel. If you live on a larger property, you may also want to consider downsizing so that you don’t have to worry about the upkeep that you may not be able to handle.
Regardless of what your reasons are, if you feel like it is the right time to sell your home, now is a good time to start looking. You are never obligated to sell, but in order to get the best deal possible, you need to do your research in advance.
